Pakistan’s Environment and Climate Change Outlook examines the country’s environmental circumstances, the effects of climate change, and the state of the nation’s response to these developments. Its goal is to offer a broad assessment of the nation’s environmental quality and new trends in sustainable development.
The report critically examines the nation’s policy response to these concerns while offering facts and information on environmental conditions, trends, and new issues, especially climate change. Additionally, it demonstrates effective programs and best practices, some of which may be duplicated. The report concludes by outlining the main issues and areas that require immediate attention.
The main issue noted is how to advance national development while protecting the nation’s natural resources, encouraging eco-efficiency, and increasing public involvement while enabling local communities to take on environmental stewardship. It also points out that even though Pakistan contributes very little to greenhouse gas emissions, the nation is facing the worst environmental challenge—climate change—and that addressing it is no longer an option; rather, it is now an inevitable reality due to the growing symptoms, which include devastating droughts and floods. The identified possible effects of climate change are extensive and are probably going to have an impact on every aspect of development, including several industries and ecosystems.
The University of Peshawar’s Climate Change Division worked closely with UNEP to produce the report. We express our gratitude to the report’s author, Dr. Mohammad Aslam Khan, Professor at the University of Peshawar. Additionally, I would like to thank this Division’s Directors, Mr. Zia-ul-Islam and Mr. Irfan Tariq, who contributed greatly to the creation of this report. We really appreciate and recognize UNEP’s generous financial assistance in preparing the study.
